Site of Mr. Porter's Public House in Greenville, IN

Following the reception of section 83, Joseph journeyed back to Ohio. On the way there, Newel K. Whitney severely broke his leg/ankle and couldn't be moved for several weeks. They spent that time in Greenville, Indiana. In a related excerpt published in the Church News: "They stayed at 'Mr Porter’s public house.' Through research by Richard Lambert and Greenville local historian Matt Uhl, the site where Porter’s public house once stood has been identified. The inn has been replaced by a home built in the 1940s. While in Greenville, Joseph wrote a letter, still extant, to his wife, Emma, in his own hand. He noted visiting 'a grove which is just back of the town almost every day.' Such groves are still situated near the site where he stayed (see 'Joseph Smith Papers: Documents' Vol. 2:246-257)."
