Abstract | Abinadi taught that Jesus Christ was both "the Father and the Son." This has caused many to wonder whether the Book of Mormon teaches a trinitarian concept of God. By viewing Abinadi's teachings through the lenses of Mesoamerican "deity complexes," however, a different understanding emerges. These "deity complexes" in Maya religion envisioned single deities in various manifestations with interrelated functions and titles. By viewing Abinadi's teachings in this light, readers may see the prophet teaching about Jesus Christ's roles and titles, and not necessarily that he is one God with the Father in a trinitarian sense. |
