Abstract

The KJV translation of Luke 22:43–44 depicts Jesus as bleeding great drops of bloody sweat. The Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants both affirm that Jesus suffered greatly in Gethsemane and bled from every pore, seemingly harking back to the verses in Luke. However, New Testament scholarship has complicated the textual history and meaning of Luke 22:43–44. This KnoWhy explores this subject from a perspective that incorporates both Restoration scripture and recent scholarship.
