Like many communities in their day, the early members of the Church sought to establish a perfect society—one which could provide prosperity and well-being for all of its citizens. In response, the Lord revealed the Law of Consecration, which taught the principles and laws upon which Zion could be built. Importantly, the Book of Mormon had already established many of this law’s foundational principles. It also showed several examples of societies who lived this law to one degree or another. When read together, the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants offer a deep and expansive understanding of Zion.
