Moroni inserted large blocks of commentary into Ether, unlike his father, who rarely did this when abridging. This is likely because Moroni assumed that he would die shortly after finishing Ether. Thus, Ether would be his only chance to express his own thoughts. In Mormon’s case, a ten-year peace treaty between the Nephites and Lamanites made around the year 350, would have given Mormon plenty of time to compile and abridge the Book of Mormon, so he knew he would have time to write about his own life. Moroni’s work reminds the reader of what people can do, even in the most difficult circumstances.
