Abstract

Honorable Mention in the 2021 Book of Mormon Central Art Contest.

I love the part in Doctrine and Covenants 25 that bids Emma give her time to learning and writing. The Lord cares what Emma did with her time, and he cares what I do with mine. I loved that she and, in effect, we are encouraged to use our intellectual skills to build the kingdom. I used reference photos from the Joseph Smith Papers website for many of the items seen in the painting.

The artist is a painter whose art revolves around spiritual topics, typically focusing on what it feels like to be a modern-day disciple of Jesus Christ. She is interested in the place where realism meets abstraction. She feels that she can communicate spiritual matters most cohesively in this space. She hopes that her art will connect with others and is grateful for the connection it provides her to her Heavenly Parents. Ultimately, her goal as a painter is to draw closer to Christ. Her paintings serve as a visual journal of that process.
