Abstract

A contemporary of the prophet Jeremiah, Lehi foretold the destruction of Jerusalem and the ensuing Babylonian captivity and called upon his countrymen to repent of their sins. They responded with anger and derision. As a storyteller, Christensen depended on careful observation of real people for figures in his paintings. Note for instance the pose of the young boy on the far right side. It is the pose of a real boy, not the academically classical pose most often used in religious paintings from the European tradition.
